Camping  

NOTES
Camping is only permitted in designated areas. All campsites are located on, or near beaches or protected land – in the interest of protecting the environment, animals are not permitted.

WATER
Drinking water quality cannot be guaranteed.  It is recommended that water be boiled or treated prior to drinking.
All campgrounds have toilets and a water supply.  

FIRE
Fire is the single greatest danger to our environment and permits are required for all outdoor fires with the exceptions of gas barbecues. Fire fighting equipment is limited and help may take some time to arrive.


NEW YEARS EVE
Each year the sports and social club at Claris hosts a New Years Eve party.
For details on bands and DJs performing this year please contact the club direct on 09 4290260.
GBI Shuttle Buses (located at Claris) operates a bus service to the club from Awana and Medlands between 8pm and 3am. Details of the timetable will be available at the campgrounds.

Sugarloaf Campground

Kaitoke Beach

Shaded by the 80 year old podocarps, on the southern area of beautiful Kaitoke Beach, this camping area is also close to the Mermaid pool.
Water, toilets, showers.

Large campground set on farm with mature trees.
Water, toilets, hot showers, cook house and wet weather shelter.

Awana ~ Situated at Awana Estuary, approx 400m from popular surf beach.  No shade.

Harataonga ~
Situated under mature trees approx 300m from the beach.  The most isolated of all the campgrounds. 2.5km from main Claris to Port Fitzroy road.

Medlands ~
Located at the southern end of Medlands Beach.

Okiwi ~ Close to great surf at the edge of the Whangapoua Estuary and close to airstrip (seasonal airstrip). No shade or shelter.

Port Fitzroy ~ Situated at the DoC headquarters, Akapoua Bay. Close to start of many short walks and day hikes. 1km to shop and supplies

Whangaparapara ~
Located on the edge of Whangaparapara Harbour. Walk in access 10 minutes. Close to start of several walking tracks and Hot Springs.

DoC Hut (Kaiarara)
There is now only one hut, located near Port Fitzroy.
Availability is on a "first come, first served" basis.
FEES
1st March to 30th November $8 per night ($2 child/youth)
1st December to end February $9 per night ($4.50 child/youth)

BOOKINGS
Campgrounds are normally full over Christmas and New Year - bookings recommended.
Fees are payable at time of booking otherwise a self-registration system is in operation at each campground. A campground supervisor may collect fees during peak periods.
